Growth mindset is at the core of Make Your Mind Up, so much so I believe without understanding and developing it in the first place, I would never have persisted through the challenges thrown at me along this process and the app and web portal probably wouldn't exist today.
What Is Growth Mindset?
Growth mindset applies to all of us and anything we do. No matter our age, background or job. Carol Dweck, the founder of growth mindset, studied the behaviour and attitudes of thousands of children and coined the terms 'fixed mindset' and 'growth mindset' to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence.
Dweck found that “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success, without effort. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent are just the starting point."
So how does our mindset impact our time at school? I hear you ask...
Well the answer, in a nutshell, is MASSIVELY! Students with a a fixed mindset learn less than they could, or learn at a slower rate and avoid challenges like the plague. Dweck also found that when students with fixed mindsets fail at something, as inevitably we all do, they tell themselves they can’t or won’t ever be able to do it and don't try again - "I just can’t learn Algebra" (we've all been there!)
Students with a growth mindset may learn more, more quickly and view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve their skills and learning. This creates an objective view of our time at school/college/university/anything, building resilience when things go wrong and not giving up. Pushing ourselves because we know our intelligence level is not defined and effort and hard work will lead to improvement.
